Gimli WWTP – Project Highlight
In early 2020, the Gimli Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Manitoba installed a Photoionization (PI) unit from NeutraTek to improve air quality. Designed to treat air streams with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) levels averaging 25 parts per million (ppm) and peaking at 150 ppm, the PI unit began continuous operation in March 2021.
Upon activation, extreme H2S levels were detected at the WWTP headworks and Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) tanks. Our Chief Technical Officer, Shan, worked closely with municipal engineers and operators to assess the situation. Independent third-party testing over four days revealed an average H2S concentration of 54 ppm and peaks up to 184 ppm. Despite these high levels, the PI unit effectively reduced the H2S at the outlet to non-detectable levels, demonstrating its robustness and reliability.
Our team played a crucial role in identifying and addressing the source of high H2S, which was traced back to industrial discharge from the Diageo facility. By collaborating with municipal engineers, we facilitated effective management of this discharge, leading to a significant reduction in H2S levels entering the plant. The municipality then managed this discharge, which paved the way for a second round of performance testing. The second test revealed improved conditions, with inlet H2S levels averaging 17 ppm and peaking at 49 ppm. Once again, the PI unit maintained non-detectable H2S levels at the outlet.
The installation and operation of the PI unit at Gimli WWTP have significantly enhanced air quality. This success story highlights the importance of advanced treatment solutions, the effectiveness of Neutralox PI technology, and the value of our team’s collaboration with municipal authorities in managing environmental challenges.
